Cold Weather and Dry Skin

22nd Feb 2017

Hello All!

Today we wanted to touch on a subject that Montana residents know all too well... cold weather and dry skin. Montana winters can last for about six months of the year, or longer. But why is cold weather so harsh on your epidermis anyways?

In this part of the United States our humidity levels are relatively low, especially in the winter months. Between harsh winds and bitter temperatures, the moisture from inside your skin is drawn outward, leaving you flaky and dehydrated. Another cause of seasonally dry skin is due to the increased usage of heaters, hot water and longer showers. If you find that you're taking warmer, longer showers or hopping in the hot tub to shake your chills, you may want to scale it back as this is actually stripping away your skin's natural oils.

So what can you do to treat the winter itch? Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Our Gypsy Cream is PERFECT for this (and a number of other things... but let's stay on track here). Hemp seed oil is the first ingredient in Gypsy Cream and also makes up more than 1/3 of the product, compared to a suggested usage of just 3% in cosmetic formulas.

One of the reasons that hemp seed oil is such a powerful moisturizer and excellent healing agent is because it has the same perfect ratio of omega 3's and omega 6's as our skin (when it's in its most healthy state). Hemp seed oil is also one of the most dry oils, which causes it to be very emollient. It quickly soaks into your skin, won't leave you greasy all day long and also doesn't clog your pores! Read more about why hemp seed oil is so good for you by clicking here. Another ingredient that makes Gypsy Cream so powerful is the Montana mineral water that we use in the recipe, which you can read more about here.

But what about my dry lips?

If you've been skiing in Montana (or outside in the bitter mountain air for any reason at all) you know how easily your smackers can get wind-burnt or start cracking and peeling from dehydration. Well, we've got you covered here too! Our Lip Fit's number one ingredient is Kokum butter. Kokum butter improves the elasticity of the skin, has cancer fighting agents and is even known as nature's botox since it increases blood flow! One of the best parts about this balm (besides how great it makes your lips feel) is that it has a super high melting point, which means it won't melt in your pocket while your out adventuring!

All in all — winter can be rough on your skin, from head to toe. So, if you need a little help warding off the alligator scales, let us point you in the best, most natural and effective direction possible. We've got even more solutions for you than what was listed in this blog post.
